*Please note these are seedling vines - 3-4” tall
A woody deciduous vine, its leaves (with distinct 5 leaflets) carpet any surface in luxuriant green before turning brilliant colors in the fall. Climbs by means of tendrils with discs that fasten onto bark or rock, giving this vine the ability to cement itself to walls and therefore need no support. The presence of adhesive tips instead of penetrating rootlets means it doesn't damage buildings the way some vines do. Its foliage is one of the earliest of the vines to color in the fall and is striking in contrast with its beautiful, 1/4 inch blue-purple fruits. Fruits are poisonous to humans but loved by birds. A vigorous grower, it tolerates most soils and climatic conditions. A larval host to multiple Sphinx moth species.
Native to Maine
Full sun to full shade (best foliage color in full sun)
Medium to medium-wet soils
Grows (climbs or trails) 3 feet up to 40 feet
Blooms spring (inconspicuous)
Deciduous woody vine
Seed provenance: Maine Ecotype - wild collected in Damariscotta
