Lupinus perennis - Sundial lupine

A nitrogen fixing legume, blooms profusely with pea-like bluish to purple flowers. A popular choice for gardens or restorations with dry, sandy soils. Requires well-drained soils but will adapt to most dry soil types; sand. loam, and gravel. The only host plant for the Karner Blue butterfly, an endangered species native to the Great Lakes region. Can be identified from the Western lupine (Lupinus polyphyllus) by it’s more diminutive stature and it’s leaves never have more than 9 leaflets.
