White goldenrod
Solidago bicolor
-
ABOUT
Prefers sun to part shade and average to dry soils, grows up to 2-3' tall, and blooms in fall. Vertical stems feature white ray flowers and yellow disc flowers. Often found in open fields and woodland edges but can survive in a wide range of conditions. Good option for gardens as it’s less spreading than other goldenrod species.

ECOLOGICAL VALUE
Silverod is an important species for insects. “Literally hundreds of species visit goldenrod to feed on the leaves, flowers, stems, or roots; to gather pollen or nectar; to lay their eggs; or to prey upon other insects. In one field alone, a survey of insects during a single summer season found 241 different insect species.” (Carol Gracie - Summer Wildflowers of the Northeast p. 184)

WHY COURTNEY LOVES IT
I love white goldenrod because it is unique in it’s genus. It features white ray flowers and yellow disc flowers in a genus of otherwise all yellow flowered goldenrod species. It’s also unique because it is one of only a few species of goldenrod that can grow in shade. We have it growing naturally around our field edges and it stands out beautifully against other goldenrods and asters.
