Echinacea purpurea

  • About

    A garden classic!

Their preference is for full or partial sun, and moist to medium conditions. Best in fertile loam, but the soil can contain some gravel or clay. Grows up to 4’ tall and blooms July to September.

  • Ecological & Cultural importance

A drought-tolerant perennial that is also deer resistant. They are much-loved by bees.

Plains Indians used the root to treat rattlesnake bites, bee stings, headaches, toothaches, sore throats, and distemper in horses. Coneflowers are still widely used today in pharmaceutical preparations. - Prairie Moon Nursery

  • Why Courtney loves it

If you are looking to attract the painted lady butterfly (Vanessa cardui) to your yard, you should plant purple coneflower. This is one of my favorite things about it, when flowering you will without doubt see multiple, beautifully delicate painted ladies coming to sip it’s nectar.

Perennial & Native to central and eastern North America
