Boneset

Eupatorium perfoliatum

  • About

Also commonly know as Thoroughwort. Prefers full sun and moist soils, grows up to 4’ tall, blooms July-September. Closely related to Joe Pye weed. Typically found on the shores of streams, ponds, lakes or rivers. A great choice for rain gardens.

  • Ecological importance

Supports 41 species of caterpillar, including the caterpillar of the Spring Azure butterfly. An excellent pollen and nectar producer and attracts many insect species. Great for planting after the removal of invasive species.

  • Why Courtney loves it

I love boneset because with great reliability you will find this plant growing next to a fresh water body - whether it is a tiny pond in the middle of the woods or a big lake with many houses along it’s shore. Every time I see it, it’s like seeing and old friend.
